ABOUT
HUGO
Once upon a time . . . long ago . . . well . . . in the latter half of the last century actually . . . Hugo attended St. Martins in London to study art and design.
It was a fairly short visit. He failed to even complete two terms . . . temptation, in the form of travel, money and some other diversions (that were suddenly and ubiquitously available), took priority (aah youth!).
During the next few years, paintings were occasionally submitted to the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition . . . and were then summarily . . . and rightly, rejected.
After a number of years spent traveling (generally acknowledged to be ‘dossing about’), residence in Egypt was chosen (bizarre. . . but cheap!) – initially in Alexandria, and later at Luxor in Upper Egypt.
It was very hot!
‘A living’ was ‘scratched’ by painting portraits – both for the locals and for the tourists.
It was, however TOO hot! (and meagre).
The ‘Middle-Eastern romance’ ended and a return to England proved to be a mere springboard to the east coast of the USA . . . and a much more comfortable existence near Philadelphia.
Nothing lasts forever (luckily) . . . and, reassuringly back in England, a quantity of other matters commanded attention . . . and continued to do so. . . for some considerable time!
Hugo, now resident in Bruton, Somerset, returned to painting in 2008 and is currently creating a portfolio of his work for exhibition and sale.
